As a design engineer, your first tool isn’t Figma. It isn’t your code editor.
It’s your eye.
Before the software. Before the grids. Before the systems. Before the pixels, your eye is already working. It notices balance, tension, harmony, spacing, color, composition, and emotion long before your hands touch the keyboard.
A strong eye is what separates someone who simply arranges elements from someone who creates experiences people can feel.
That’s why eye care isn’t optional for creatives. It’s maintenance for one of your most important instruments.
Schedule regular eye checkups. Most creatives spend thousands of hours in front of screens while giving little attention to the eyes doing all the work.
Use blue-light protection if you work long hours on screens. Glasses, filters, display settings, whatever helps reduce strain for you.
Practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Small habit, noticeable difference over time.
Also pay attention to your environment. Lighting, screen brightness, posture, and viewing distance affect eye fatigue more than most people realize.
Your eyes aren’t just for seeing.
For creatives, they’re part of the craft.
