I built a SaaS product. Spent months on it.
Then I asked ChatGPT about it.
It had no idea I existed. Not “sort of wrong.” Not “mentioned me badly.” Just nothing. Like I had never shipped anything.
At the same time, a competitor with a weaker product kept getting cited as the go-to option. Their content was built for AI systems to read, not just for Google to rank.
That was the moment GEO and AEO clicked for me.
GEO means Generative Engine Optimization. AEO means Answer Engine Optimization.
The idea is simple: AI tools do not give you 10 blue links and let users sort it out. They pick one answer and quote it. If your site is not set up to be that answer, you disappear in AI search.
So I spent the next few weeks studying how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude decide what to cite. Then I turned that into a SaaS called RankAsAnswer.
Here’s what I found:
- Most sites are written for people scrolling fast.
- AI tools want short, direct, self-contained answers.
- Your FAQ can be a strong citation source, or it can be ignored.
- Your first 80 words matter a lot.
The gap between being ignored and being cited is not just about backlinks or domain authority. It comes down to how clearly your information is structured.
Honest question: have you ever searched your own name, product, or service in ChatGPT or Perplexity to see what it says?
A) Yes, and it was accurate. B) Yes, and it was wrong or missing. C) Never tried it. Doing it now.
