Hold to Think — The 2025 Interaction
The first interaction designed to make you smarter, not faster.
This is my submission for the Figma Makeathon challenge.
Every iconic interaction was built for speed. Swipe. Scroll. Tap. Nobody ever designed one for thinking.
Hold to Think reimagines the long-press into an intelligent decision layer. You hold a button. A ring grows. The interface surfaces what you need to know. Then you decide.

This is a powerful shift in interaction philosophy. Designing for cognition instead of speed could fundamentally change how we measure UX success. Curious how you tested user response to slower, intentional interactions?

For testing, I observed how people naturally hesitate before high-stakes actions — posting, buying, deleting, sending — and designed the 1.5 second hold to match that natural pause people already feel but...
That’s fascinating — designing around natural hesitation instead of fighting it feels like a more human-centered evolution of interaction design. Making that pause intentional could also reduce regret-driven actions. I’d be curious to see how this performs in high-frequency apps.

• The goal was not to make it fancy.
It was to make the search useful. Students need quick means to find a conversation without distracting their learning.
• For this MVP, I focused on simplicity.
Clean interface, clear message hierarchy, and minimal friction to start a conversation. No unnecessary features yet, just the core interaction working properly.
• I paid attention to the small details.
Input behaviour, timestamps, empty states, and how responses appear. Chat is less about visuals and more about flow and timing.
• What worked?
The interaction feels direct and distraction-free.
• What’s next?
Exploring message states, smart prompts, and possibly structured replies once we validate usage.
It’s still early, but direction > perfection.
