Hello world! As an engineer, that's what we learn when we first learn how to program. I would also let that to be the lead of my very first post on Contra.
I've spent enough years around hiring pipelines — as an engineer and as someone who's had to evaluate other engineers — to trust exactly one signal: what someone actually shipped. Not what they wrote about themselves. Not 45 minutes at a whiteboard. Not a take-home they did for free on a Saturday and never heard back about.
Everything else in the hiring stack is a proxy for that, and most of the proxies are broken. Post a role today and you get hundreds of applications in a week, most reading like the same résumé because in a real sense they are — same polishing tools, same keyword parsers. Somewhere in that pile is someone great, and you have no reliable way to find them without burning three weeks.
Take-homes were supposed to fix this. They didn't. Unpaid, hours of real work, submitted into a void. And your strongest candidates — the ones with other offers — are the first to drop out of a process that asks for a free afternoon before a single conversation.
So I built Builders' Echo — the take-home you wouldn't hate. A company posts a real challenge and puts a prize behind it. Builders submit real, GitHub-backed solutions. It's paid. It doesn't vanish — your work becomes a ranked, public result with your name on it. It's judged blind: name, school, and LinkedIn stripped before anyone scores the work. And it handles AI honestly — every submission is scored for originality against every other one, because the question isn't "did you use AI," it's "is this actually yours."
Where it stands: I'm a solo founder, bootstrapped, no outside funding. The platform is feature-complete — contest creation, blind judging, the originality engine, company dashboards, all live. What's not done is the part that matters: real contests, real builders, real companies. That's the job now. I'm writing this from day one, not from "we made it," because I'd rather build in public than fake traction I don't have.
If you're tired of unpaid take-homes and filters that can't see your actual work — come build something and let the work speak. buildersecho.com🚀

Opening a first Contra post with Hello World is a perfect engineering touch. What lesson from evaluating engineers most shaped the hiring pipeline you are building?

I think it's mainly personal experiences on both sides of the coin. I personally have been failed too many times on both ends of the traditional hiring process—first as a candidate who knew I could do the job but struggled to “perform” in interviews, and later as someone helping...
