Is GPT-6 Astra coming for AI/ML jobs? Here's my honest take.
Every time a new model drops, the same fear shows up: "This is the end of ML careers." Astra is a big step forward, especially for coding and long, multi-step tasks, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But I don't think it makes ML professionals obsolete. Here's why.
1. Writing code was never the whole job. Real ML work is mostly figuring out what to build. That means defining the problem, deciding which metric matters to the business, and judging whether the data can support the answer. A model can help you write a training loop. It can't own the question of whether you should be training anything at all.
2. Data is the hard part, and it's messy. Cleaning, labeling, and understanding messy real-world data takes domain knowledge and context. That context usually lives in a client's head, not in a prompt.
3. Someone has to be accountable. When a model is deployed and it fails, a person has to explain why, fix it, and monitor it. Clients hire people they can trust and hold responsible, not just a tool that produces output.
4. Better tools raise the bar. Compilers, cloud platforms, and AutoML all changed the work without ending it. The people who learned the new tools did more, faster. The same is likely true here.
5. AI is a force multiplier for people who know the field. Knowing how to evaluate model output, spot subtle bugs, and catch bad assumptions matters even more when the output is fast and confident-sounding.
My advice: Don't ignore Astra. Use it. Learn where it's strong and where it needs checking. Freelancers who combine solid ML fundamentals with these tools will be the ones clients want.
