Anthropic's new Opus 5 is beating their own flagship model (Fable 5) on most benchmarks, and it's cheaper. Here's why that's not as weird as it sounds
The trick: Opus 5 was distilled from the bigger model. Think teacher → student: the "teacher" (Fable/Mythos) passes down its best knowledge, while the risky or unnecessary parts get filtered out. Result: a smaller, cheaper model that keeps most of the smarts.
Why it's still not simply "better": → Fable knows more facts (it's just a bigger brain) → Fable is more token-efficient, so the real-world cost gap is closer to 20-25%, not the advertised 50%
Why people are switching to it anyway:
🧠 Personality - think of it as the middle ground between two extremes: •"Soul" (OpenAI-style) = relentless, follows orders exactly, but sloppy code •Fable = smart, tasteful, but sometimes cuts corners
• Opus 5 = diligent, double-checks itself, follows instructions well, low babysitting required
💰 Better subscription value - Fable only gives you half your weekly usage quota; Opus gives you the full quota
🔒 No mandatory data logging - opens it up for companies with strict privacy/legal requirements
⚠️ Trade-off - it's slightly less knowledgeable and still makes the occasional odd mistake, but nothing major
Bottom line:
• Want fast + cheap "just do it" execution → Soul
• Want the smartest, most tasteful output, cost aside → Fable
• Want a great all-rounder that mostly just works → Opus 5
The best advice from the video: don't trust any single reviewer (including this one), run the same prompt on a few models and compare.
