Remember when every AI model release came with bragging rights about billions of parameters? Bigger = better, period.
July 2026 is showing that era is coming to an end.
The industry has quietly but decisively shifted focus. The question "how big is the model?" has been replaced by a far more practical one: "how well does it complete real tasks without supervision?"
Here's what's driving it:
💸 Inference costs have collapsed. According to Stanford's AI Index, running a GPT-3.5-level model got over 280x cheaper between late 2022 and late 2024 — and the curve keeps falling. Features that were financially impossible two years ago can now be deployed at scale.
🤖 Agents became a working tool. Systems that plan multi-step tasks, use browsers and APIs, and move toward a goal with minimal human input are no longer demos — they're everyday reality. With one important caveat: narrow scope and human guardrails are still a must.
📊 Multimodality is the baseline. Text, image, audio, and video in one model — nobody brags about this anymore, it's simply the default expectation.
So what does this mean for us — freelancers and product builders?
Value is shifting away from access to the technology (it's now cheap and available to everyone) toward the ability to embed it into a real workflow — reliably, predictably, and with measurable results.

The Fundamental AI launch was happening. Designs were still changing less than a week before go-live. A $1.4B company was coming out of stealth mode, covered simultaneously by AWS and Axios.
My decision concerned managing information flow. I could have just built what came in, delivered it, and finished. The client would have seen progress when it was complete.
