New manager? A one-on-one can reveal more than a status report.
Try three questions before proposing a fix:
What is taking more effort than I can see from the outside?
Where do you need a decision rather than more advice?
What should I understand before changing how the work is done?
Fictional example: “The handoff keeps arriving late” may point to an unclear owner or a missing approval—not a need to tell someone to work faster. Ask what happens between the handoff steps before deciding what to change.
Keep notes about the work, agree on a useful next step, and avoid promising a change you cannot authorize.
