Here's the trade-off I actually weigh before recommending either.
EKS gives you real power:
ā
Fine-grained scheduling and control
ā
A massive ecosystem
ā
Portability across clouds
ā
Handles very large, complex workloads
But EKS is a system you operate. Someone has to own:
ā Cluster upgrades and node groups
ā Networking, RBAC, security policies
ā The endless YAML
On a 3ā5 person team, that someone becomes a full-time job nobody budgeted for.
For most early teams, I reach for ššš¦ šš®šæš“š®šš²:
ā
No nodes to manage
ā
No control plane to babysit
ā
Host patching, scaling, capacity all handled by AWS
ā
You hand it a container and a task definition; it runs
The trade-offs, honestly:
ā Less low-level control
ā Tighter coupling to AWS
ā Very large or specialized workloads will outgrow it
The rule I keep coming back to:
š§šµš² šÆš²šš š¶š»š³šæš®šššæšš°šššæš² š³š¼šæ š® ššŗš®š¹š¹ šš²š®šŗ š¶šš»'š ššµš² šŗš¼šš š½š¼šš²šæš³šš¹. šš'š ššµš² š¼š»š² ššµš®š š»š²š²š±š ššµš² š¹š²š®šš šÆš®šÆššš¶ššš¶š»š“ so your engineers build the product, not operate the platform.
Kubernetes is a great answer to a question most early teams aren't asking yet.
Pick the boring option that lets you sleep. Graduate to EKS the day you genuinely feel Fargate's limits most teams never do.
