Folks, I was just scammed by someone posing to represent Hope Farm Animal Sanctuary.
The short version of it: she contacted me via Contra's messaging featuring offering a 4-week assignment at $450 per week.
I should have paid attention to the initial signs:
1) let's email off-line 2) payment (outside of Contra) via check from a "donor" 3) outlook email (not one from the Sanctuary) 4) offer of an upfront payment of $500 (the extra $50 to cover premium versions of Canva + Trello)
After that first email where she mentioned the check payment - saying she would send the check image via email so I wouldn't have to "go directly to the bank," I contacted Contra support. They immediately followed up with the person a HFAS.
Yesterday, I received an email with an image of the check. More red flags: the bank, routing #, the amount.

OK, technically, I was 'potentially' scammed. Still, it's a big deal. I was excited to get my first client.
The other red flag: they asked for design services (yes, I use Canva for my flyers), though my expertise is journalism + content creation! p.s. I'm waiting on Contra Support before I release the person's name.
