Your financial reports can be 100% accurate and still be useless for decision-making.
That sounds strange, right?
If the numbers are correct, shouldn't the report be useful?
Not necessarily.
Imagine a business owner asks:
“Why did profit fall this month?”
And the report gives them:
Revenue: $180K COGS: $95K Operating Expenses: $72K Net Profit: $13K
The numbers may be perfectly accurate.
But the question still hasn't been answered.
Was it because:
→ sales volume dropped? → gross margin declined? → payroll increased? → marketing spending increased? → one-off expenses occurred? → a particular product became less profitable?
This is the difference between reporting numbers and providing insight.
A good management report shouldn't just tell you what happened.
It should help explain:
What changed? Why did it change? Is it temporary or recurring? What should we do next?
That's why I think financial reporting should always start with the decision it needs to support.
Instead of asking:
“What numbers should we put in the report?”
Ask:
“What decision should this report help someone make?”
Once you know that, the right metrics become much easier to identify.
More data doesn't automatically create better insight.
Sometimes, the best report is simply the one that makes the next decision obvious.
What’s one financial report you’ve seen that had plenty of numbers but very little insight?
