What’s one ethical challenge you think designers will face in the next 5 years?
For me, it’s designing sustainably in a world driven by rapid consumption—creating meaningful, lasting work that avoids adding to the throwaway culture of digital and physical design.

@Sami Downing an obvious one for Contra, is designing a community that incentivizes engagement without creating negative side effects. I think instagram and twitter have had issues here and it will be a challenge long term
@Ben Huffman It’s such a challenge, but one worth tackling and I love seeing all the new features Contra rolls out to address this so thoughtfully!
@Sami Downing oooohh when you mention rapid consumption it reminds me of the fashion industry like fashion nova and others alike.
If someone wants to combat that, it has to be in the culture itself. A culture that admires quality and having fewer pieces in turn. BUTT thats a pretty hard...

@Sami Downing sustainability is a huge one for me. I struggle with but knowing what I don't know and possibly designing something unintentionally bad for the Earth
@Jacquelyn Demshick I feel ya! Sustainability is such a complex topic, and it’s easy to feel like we might overlook something unintentionally. But I think even having the intention to design more thoughtfully is a big step forward.
This is an amazing post! I believe truthfulness and respect are crucial in all creative endeavors. Given how polarizing politics have become worldwide, it’s imperative that we, as creatives, continually seek ways to represent our work—and the people it’s intended for—with the utmost respect and authenticity.
