Here's the uncomfortable truth: the code is not the value. Terraform is free. GitHub Actions is free. The AWS docs that explain every service you configure are free. If you're selling the act of writing that configuration, you're competing with everyone who can also read the docs and that race only goes one direction. Down.
What a founder actually pays for is different.
They pay to never get the 2 AM call that production is down.
They pay to not hire a full-time DevOps engineer they can't afford yet.
They pay so their team stops spending Friday afternoons patching servers by hand instead of shipping the product.
They pay for the outage that doesn't happen, the bill that stops climbing, the hire they get to delay by a year.
None of that is "Terraform." Terraform is just how you deliver it.
The freelancers who understand this charge for outcomes and stay busy. The ones who sell "Infrastructure as Code services" send quotes priced by the hour and wonder why clients haggle.
Same skills. Same tools. Completely different business.

A good website developer shouldn't say yes to everything.
“Can we add this animation?”
Yes.
“Can we add another popup?”
Yes.
“Can we put everything on the homepage?”
Yes.
“Can we add 15 more plugins?”
Yes.
That's not always good service.
Sometimes the best answer is:
“No. I don't think that's a good idea.”
Not because it can't be done.
But because it shouldn't be done.
I've learned that my job isn't simply to execute requests.
It's to question them when necessary.
If something makes the website slower, harder to use, harder to maintain, or less effective for the business, I'd rather explain the problem than blindly build it.
Clients don't just need someone who can build.
They need someone who can think.
And sometimes the most valuable thing a developer can add to a project is a well-timed:
“Let's rethink that.”
Would you rather work with a developer who always says yes or one who challenges your ideas when necessary?
I've found that a no lands better when the client can see the tradeoff. I'd show what the extra animation or popup costs in load time and attention, then offer the smallest version that still does the job.
