My editing process in 5 steps:
A client once asked: "What actually happens between 'I'll take this on' and 'here's the draft'?"
Fair question. Here's my editing process, stripped down:
1. First read (no pen). I just marinate. Feel the shape of it.
2. Big-picture notes. What's the core? What's wandering?
3. Line-level pass. Sentence by sentence. Rhythm, clarity, breath.
4. The editorial letter. A conversation with the writer about what we're building together.
5. Distance. I step away, then return. The manuscript reveals itself in the silence between looks.
Editing isn't fixing. It's listening for what the piece wants to become.

Love this breakdown. That first step of just reading and “marinating” in the piece is underrated but makes a huge difference in understanding the flow.

Thank you, Abhiram. That "marinating" step is the one I'm most protective of. It's the only time I get to experience the piece as a reader before I put on my editor hat. Once I start marking things, I can never go back to that first, innocent read. Something about letting it sit...

That’s a great way to approach it. Letting the piece sit before editing really helps you see it with fresh eyes.
