How I Accidentally Became My Own Career Villain 😈 …
Last Saturday, during our usual ā€œweekly life, work, coffee, and professionally disguised gossipā€ meetup, something unexpectedly cinematic happened. Someone walked in and met one of their design heroes in real life. My friend was basically Batman in that moment. I was Green Lantern, respectfully present, mostly decorative, still recovering from the movie.
Sorry, I cannot disclose the fan's or hero's identity because I did not get their consent before writing this. But I am pretty sure they will dramatically swipe into the comment section once they read it.
Anyway, after the fan and the hero had their wholesome main-character moment, we started talking about work, opportunities, mistakes, and all the beautiful ways adulthood chooses violence.Ā
Naturally, I brought up one of my finest career crimes: missing a couple of real opportunities because the email on my LinkedIn profile was not my daily email.
Yes. Companies reached out. I did not see it. Because apparently, I had treated that inbox like an abandoned storage unit behind a gas station. By the time I replied, the silence was so loud it could have had its own soundtrack. My friend, the so-called hero, has roasted me for this repeatedly, and honestly, the court finds him annoying but correct.
And yes, I may now be checking my email every 8 hours like a man trying to decode smoke signals from the universe.
Desperate? Maybe... Responsible? Suddenly, very much indeed.
The tragic comedy is this: they reached out first.
In their eyes, I was that good. And I know I am good, great even, humbly speaking, with the confidence of a man currently rebuilding his portfolio like it is entering a final boss fight. Fully maxed out. Polished. Sharpened. Spiritually caffeinated.
So here is the fix before you become the cautionary tale at someone’s coffee meetup: connect LinkedIn to the email you actually check. Not your ā€œprofessional but forgottenā€ email. Not the one you open once every fiscal quarter. The one you see every day.Ā
Lesson of the day:
Your portfolio can be stunning, your work can be sharp, and your talent can be screaming in 4K with a dramatic Hans Zimmer score, but if your opportunities are landing in an inbox you check once every presidential term, congratulations, you have successfully turned your career pipeline into a haunted house.Ā
So update your LinkedIn email, use the one you actually check, and open your inbox daily, because sometimes the ā€œbig breakā€ does not arrive with fireworks, a motivational soundtrack, or divine LinkedIn intervention.
Sometimes it just sits quietly in your email, aging like an unpaid credit card debt, waiting for you to stop being the final boss of your own progress.
