Recently had a conversation that reminded me how common the "We have no competition" mindset is among founders.
A founder working on a freelancer productivity tool told me they had no competitors.
But when asked about inspiration, they immediately mentioned Notion.
This revealed a fundamental misunderstanding to me.
If another product inspired your solution, you're competing in the same problem space, even if your approach differs.
Competition exists in layers, and many don't know that.
Sometimes, founders who say "no competition" usually mean "no identical solution."
But customers don't care about identical solutions.
They care about getting their problems solved effectively.
Understanding your competition isn't about finding threats to fear.
It's about finding opportunities to position better.
