I’m starting a new series: “Make Your Numbers Make Sense.”
As an accountant, I’ve noticed that many business owners don’t actually need more numbers — they need to understand the numbers they already have.
Revenue. Profit. Cash flow. VAT. Xero. P&L.
These can look complicated, but they don't have to be.
So I’m starting a daily series where I’ll take one accounting/business number at a time and explain what it actually means for a business owner — simply and practically.
Episode 1 coming next:
“Your business made £100,000. So why isn't £100,000 in your bank account?”
If you're a founder, freelancer, or small-business owner, follow along.
AI doesn't replace my accounting work.
It helps me spend less time on the boring parts. 🤖📊
I've been in bookkeeping and financial reporting for 5+ years, and I use ChatGPT regularly. Not to do my job, but to clear the repetitive work out of the way so I can focus on the work that needs an accountant.
Here's where it helps me most:
✉️ Client emails
Chasing missing documents, explaining a query, following up politely. I give it the key points and it gives me a clean first draft in seconds.
💬 Plain-English explanations
Turning "accruals," "deferred revenue," or "VAT reconciliation differences" into something a founder can understand without a finance degree.
✅ Checklists
Month-end close, onboarding a new client, year-end prep. A solid starting structure that I then tailor to the business.
📝 Documentation
Process notes, SOPs, and handover documents. The tasks everyone postpones are done in a fraction of the time.
🔍 Analysis support
Brainstorming reasons for a variance, structuring a review, or sense-checking how I've laid out a summary.
But here's what AI doesn't do:
❌ It doesn't know your client's real situation
❌ It doesn't apply tax rules with certainty
❌ It doesn't take responsibility for the numbers
Every output gets reviewed. Every figure gets verified. And I never paste confidential client data into a tool without thinking about privacy first.
Accounting judgment, professional skepticism, and accountability stay with the accountant. That part isn't automatable.
AI saves me time. My expertise is what makes the work right.
