**Your budget says you should have $10,000 left.
Your bank account says $6,500.
Which one is wrong?**
Maybe neither.
A budget is a plan.
Your bank balance is a snapshot.
The real insight comes from comparing the two.
Try a simple Budget vs. Actual review every month:
Revenue Budget: $30,000 Actual: $27,000 → 10% below plan
Marketing Budget: $3,000 Actual: $4,200 → 40% above plan
Software & subscriptions Budget: $800 Actual: $1,150 → 44% above plan
Operating expenses Budget: $8,000 Actual: $9,100 → 14% above plan
Looking at the bank balance alone might tell you:
“We spent more than expected.”
But a Budget vs. Actual analysis tells you why.
Maybe revenue is lower.
Maybe one expense category is growing too quickly.
Maybe a one-off purchase distorted the month.
Or maybe your original budget was simply unrealistic.
That's why I don't think the goal of budgeting is to predict the future perfectly.
The goal is to create a benchmark for better decisions.
Every month, ask:
1. What was different? Find the biggest variances.
2. Why was it different? Separate one-off events from recurring patterns.
3. Does it matter? Not every variance requires action.
4. What should change next month? Update the plan based on what you now know.
A budget shouldn't be a document you create once and forget.
It should be a feedback loop.
Plan → Track → Compare → Understand → Adjust → Repeat.
That’s how financial data becomes a decision-making system.
💬 Do you review your actual spending against your budget every month, or only check your bank balance?
