Why vertical SaaS is outperforming horizontal SaaS in specific categories?
The pattern we keep noticing: horizontal tools win on breadth, vertical tools are winning on trust, and in specialized workflows, trust matters more.
A generic project management tool has to work for marketing teams, dev teams, and construction crews alike. That flexibility is the pitch, but also the ceiling, teams end up customizing fields and building workarounds for whatever doesn't fit the generic template.
Vertical SaaS skips that. A tool built only for veterinary clinics doesn't need a "customize your workflow" onboarding step, it's already correct on day one. Support resolves faster, sales cycles shorten, and churn drops, since switching means relearning an entire mental model, not just moving data.
This shows up most in categories with real regulatory or operational complexity, healthcare, legal, construction, logistics. In those spaces, "flexible enough for anyone" starts to read as a warning sign.
Horizontal still wins where the workflow really is generic. But underneath any real domain complexity, vertical players usually understand something horizontal ones structurally can't.
