One of the biggest mistakes in cloud architecture is overprovisioning infrastructure.
Recently, I analyzed a setup where a simple Flask API was running on an oversized EC2 instance:
🔹 EC2 m5.4xlarge 🔹 16 vCPUs 🔹 64 GB RAM 🔹 Single Flask process on port 5000 🔹 No redundancy or high availability
The result?
A monthly infrastructure cost of nearly $600/month for a workload that didn’t actually require that level of compute power.
This is where cloud cost optimization becomes important.
In many systems, performance problems are not solved by “adding bigger servers” — they are solved by: ✅ Better architecture ✅ Proper scaling strategies ✅ Load balancing ✅ Containerization ✅ Monitoring actual utilization
Cloud is powerful, but inefficient architecture can silently burn thousands of dollars every year.
What I’m learning is: A good cloud engineer doesn’t just deploy infrastructure.
They design systems that are scalable, reliable, and financially efficient.
