The SEO-to-AEO shift is already here. Most content strategies haven't caught up. Google isn't the only place people find answers anymore. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot. Your audience is asking questions inside AI tools, and those tools are pulling from content that's structured to answer directly, not just rank. That's the shift from SEO to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). And if your content isn't built for both, you're losing visibility you can't even track in Google Analytics. I'm already building content systems with this in mind. Here are 3 things I check before anything I write goes live:
1. Research depth. Surface-level posts get surfaced less. I cross-reference multiple sources, pull real data, and make sure the piece says something a reader (or an LLM) can't get from the first 3 results on Google.
2. Keyword intent match. Not just "what are people searching?" but "what do they actually want when they search this?" A how-to query and a comparison query need completely different content structures, even if the keyword looks similar.
3. Readability for humans and machines. Clear headers. Direct answers near the top. Short paragraphs. Content that an AI can parse into a clean response, and that a human can scan in 30 seconds without glazing over. Most content in 2026 still treats SEO and AEO as separate conversations. They're not. They're the same system, built with different entry points.
Is your content answering the question, or just ranking for it?
