Day 4 β€” turning Design Crit into a working prototype πŸ› οΈ
Until today Design Crit was just static screens. I moved it into Figma Make to make it actually work β€” and the prototype taught me three things.
The font mystery πŸ” Everything came out bolder than I designed it. My first thought was "I missed a weight." But I checked β€” I'd loaded every Satoshi weight, italics included. I did everything right.
So I went digging, and it turns out this is a very common problem: designers hit font weight and rendering mismatches across Figma all the time. There's no official word on Make specifically, but Figma has confirmed custom fonts aren't fully supported in Figma Sites (its sibling product) β€” so my bet is the font just doesn't survive the jump cleanly here either.
One tip if you're moving designs into a prototype: check your type right after importing. Don't assume it came over the way you built it.
It's weirdly clever πŸ€– I gave Make a single screen. It built a full clickable prototype anyway β€” and even invented the "open post" view on its own, figuring out from the "Answer" button that a detail page should exist. I reworked it later, but the initiative was genuinely impressive.
It flattens structure πŸ“ I sent it comments with a clear shape β€” name, "what's working," "what to try." Make collapsed each one into a single paragraph. The structure I'd built on purpose just disappeared.
The pattern all week: Make is great at guessing and filling, shaky at keeping the structure you built on purpose.
Still building. More soon ✨
