Something I keep noticing in conversations with business owners: almost none of them know what people are typing into AI to find them.
For years, we knew the keywords. Someone searched "marketing agency Charlotte" or "best CRM for small business," and we built pages around those exact phrases.
That's not how people search anymore. They ask full questions, often with a lot of context:
"I run a 10-person accounting firm and I'm losing clients to bigger firms. What should I focus on?"
"Which mentoring programs in Charlotte help kids who aren't sure about college?"
The AI answers with a short list of names, and the person often never sees a search results page at all.
So the question has changed. It's no longer "what keywords do we rank for?" It's "what questions are our customers asking, and when they ask, are we part of the answer?"
The good news: the fundamentals still matter. A clear, well-built website is still what these tools read. But much of the keyword-by-keyword SEO work from the last decade is getting less of the payoff it used to.
I'm curious how others are thinking about this:
Have you asked ChatGPT or Google's AI about your own business or category? What came back?
Has anyone started tracking the questions their leads ask, not just the keywords? There are solutions :)
