Mobile Video Bug on Contra: How Are You Dealing With It? 🤔
Hey everyone! Quick question for those who showcase video & motion work on Contra.
Has anyone else bumped into the annoying crossed-out play button (muted/slashed play icon) on mobile devices?
When viewing a portfolio on iOS Safari or mobile Chrome, videos often get blocked from playing automatically if they contain an audio track. Mobile OS guidelines just shut down autoplays with sound to save data, leaving users with a frozen video thumbnail and a weird icon on top.
How I solved it for my visual loops:
For background teasers and visual-only showcases, I started exporting a second, completely audio-free MP4 render (stripped out the audio track entirely in Premiere/AE) and set it to loop. Since there's zero sound data in the file, mobile browsers stop blocking it and autoplay works smoothly without any bugged icons.
The catch:
This works great for silent motion loops, but for projects where sound design, voiceovers, or scoring are crucial (like 3D commercials or AI avatars), muting the file defeats the purpose. For those, I’ve been relying on embedded Vimeo/YouTube players instead.
Is this the standard workaround everyone is using, or have you found a cleaner way to handle full-audio videos natively on Contra without hitting that mobile playback block?

For In your element, we explored a simple way to give users another option: adjust what feels wrong while staying in the player.

Users can see the current balance and change each layer without opening a separate settings screen.
The session is ready to start. Personalization is available when the listener has enough context to know what they want to change.
🧠 THE PRODUCT INSIGHT
Some preferences are easier to discover through experience.
Before pressing play, a user may not know how much piano they want. A few seconds into listening, they can make that decision.
That makes the timing of personalization a UX decision:
Start → Experience → Adjust → Continue.
Give users a useful starting point, then put relevant controls where the need appears.
📈 THE GROWTH OPPORTUNITY
An early exit can mean many things. Sometimes the content is wrong. Sometimes one adjustable detail is getting in the way.
This design gives us a specific hypothesis to test: can in-session sound controls help listeners resolve a mismatch and continue?
I’d track early exits, listening time after an adjustment, and session completion against a fixed-mix version.
Slider interactions alone wouldn’t prove success. What happens after the adjustment is what matters.
