The legal AI race is getting serious.
But the most interesting number on this leaderboard isn't who came first.
It's this: the best-performing models still fail more than half of the contract workflows.
Even the best AI models pass only about half of real contract workflow tasks. Form looks great (90%+), but substance tops out around 50%.
That's a pretty useful reminder for anyone working with AI in legal practice:
AI can draft. AI can analyze. AI can accelerate.
But judgment still matters.
That gap is exactly where I work. I use AI to draft faster, then a human lawyer catches what the model misses: the indemnity that quietly flips risk, the clause that reads fine but doesn't hold up.
