Shopify finally fixed one of my biggest theme development frustrations.
Whenever I worked on a Shopify theme's branding settings, I always found the old color_scheme approach limiting.
In most projects, I ended up adding multiple color_picker settings so merchants could control colors for buttons, badges, icons, backgrounds, borders, and other elements individually.
The problem?
Those color pickers couldn't easily reference the brand colors already defined in the theme. Merchants often had to manually copy and paste hex codes, which led to inconsistent branding and a less-than-ideal editing experience.
Now Shopify has introduced color_palette settings, and it's a huge improvement.
Define brand colors once
Reuse them throughout the entire theme
Let merchants select from approved brand colors instead of entering hex values repeatedly
Create more scalable and maintainable design systems
Deliver a cleaner, more intuitive customization experience
This feels like a small feature on the surface, but for anyone building Shopify themes regularly, it's a meaningful quality-of-life improvement.
