I asked ChatGPT to explain a P&L like a founder. ๐Ÿ“Š
Most business owners don't need a 20-line explanation of their P&L.
They need an answer to one question: "Are we actually making money?"
So I tried a simple exercise. I gave ChatGPT an example P&L, with no client data, and asked it to explain it the way I would to a founder over coffee, not the way I'd write it for an auditor.
The numbers (illustrative): Revenue: AED 500,000 Cost of sales: AED 300,000 Gross profit: AED 200,000 Operating expenses: AED 170,000 Net profit: AED 30,000
The accountant's version: "Gross margin is 40%, operating expenses are 34% of revenue, and net margin is 6%."
The founder's version: โœ… "Yes, you're making money. For every AED 100 you bring in, you keep AED 6." โš ๏ธ "It costs you AED 60 to deliver what you sell, which leaves AED 40 to cover everything else." ๐Ÿ” "Your overheads take most of that. If they grow faster than sales, profit disappears quickly." ๐Ÿ’ก "Profit isn't cash. Check your receivables before you celebrate."
That's four sentences, and the founder knows where they stand.
My 3-step method for turning numbers into insight:
Start with the answer. Profit or loss? Better or worse than last month? Lead with that.
Translate percentages into "per 100." "6% net margin" means little. "You keep AED 6 of every AED 100" lands immediately.
End with one action. Pricing, costs, collections, or cash. Pick the one that matters most.
AI is great at the first draft of this translation. But I always check the figures, add the business context it can't know, and decide what actually matters. It can simplify the language. It can't tell you why margins moved.
Good financial reporting isn't about showing more numbers. It's about making them useful.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Founders: what's the one question you wish your P&L answered? Accountants: how do you explain the numbers to non-finance clients?
