Built from nothing but squares.
Started as a pencil sketch, finished on a grid.
This mark began on paper with loose, blocky shapes. Once the form felt right, I rebuilt it in Illustrator on a strict square grid so every step, gap, and corner lines up. Pathfinder merged the pieces into one solid shape, then I adjusted the spacing by eye until it held up from favicon size to large format.
The stepped form feels digital without chasing a trend. It's flat, one color, and works on dark or light backgrounds, in print or on screen.

Spacing by eye on top of a strict grid is a nice tension. Did you keep one square module for the whole mark, or did the gaps end up needing their own smaller unit?

I started with the strict one square module, but the gaps ended up being completely spaced by eye. Trusting the eye over the grid allowed the mark to feel less rigid and more dynamic. The grid established the structural foundation, but optical alignment took over to finalize the tension.

Letting the eye overrule the grid is usually where a geometric mark stops feeling like a template. Did you check how the uneven gaps hold up at favicon size, where they can start to read as mistakes?
