Been sitting with some data this week: across 22,000 developers, AI-generated code is now up to 42% of what's shipped but review time is up 441%, and PRs wait roughly 5x longer for a human look. 96% of devs don't fully trust the AI code they're reviewing.
That tracks with what I've seen building with AI tools daily. The generation step got fast. The "does this actually handle the edge case, did it just invent an API" step didn't get faster it got more important.
Here's what's actually changed in how I review AI-assisted work: I read every diff line by line before it merges, I test against real data instead of just the happy path, and I never let an agent touch auth, payments, or migrations without a manual pass. Slower on paper. Far fewer surprises in production.
The skill worth building right now isn't "prompt better." It's "verify faster without cutting corners."
