As a graduate and journalist at a PWI with a degree in Black Studies, I have a unique perspective on succeeding at a predominantly white institution. I understand that universities typically strive for high retention rates and student involvement. But with the current social and political climate in America surrounding Departments of Ethnic and Race Studies at several universities, it is no better time than now to listen to students of color. As a lifelong public speaker and orator, I believe in encouraging our youth, adults, and communities through informative, inspiring spoken word because it is powerful and can change lives.
