Sometimes I let bad copy ship. Not because I don't know better. I have 5+ years that say otherwise. But because I've been in that meeting where a colleague rewrites my copy, not for the user, not for clarity, but because plain language makes them nervous. Like simple words mean nobody worked hard enough. So they add. They obscure. They turn "your payment failed" into "an issue was encountered during transaction processing." And sometimes I fight it. I pull up the research, I explain the reading level, I talk about cognitive load at the worst possible moment — a frustrated user staring at an error screen. Other times I just let it go. The version that didn't work always ships eventually. Drop-offs nobody can explain. Support tickets about confusion. A usability test where someone reads the screen three times and still clicks the wrong thing. And I'm sitting there knowing exactly which three words would have fixed it. The hardest part of content design isn't the writing.
