How I match a paid brand font with a free one.
tem’s headlines use Victor Serif Smooth, a commercial face. Instead of eyeballing a substitute, I read its metrics in the browser [cap height, ascender, x-height, width] and probed 18 free serifs against them. Newsreader matched the cap height and ascender exactly, at +2.3% width.
Same voice on screen, and licence-safe for a spec piece. How do you pick stand-ins?
