A full year of housing and travel cost me less than a year of rent in Porto. This year I spent around €2,700 on rent and stays (storage included, we had to keep our things somewhere) and €1,970 on flights. About €4,700 in total. A flat in Porto for my partner and me would cost €600 to €700 a month each. That’s €7,200+ a year per person, just for rent. And so far I’ve saved 29% of my income, without extreme cuts or overthinking every expense. Meanwhile: Brazil, Portugal, France, Thailand, Japan and England. Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Brazil again before the year ends. All while delivering client projects in the US, UK and Europe. What made it possible? Pet sitting. (Not in Thailand and Japan, those stays I paid for, and they’re in the numbers.) It joined my love for animals with what I value most about my work as a designer and Webflow developer: working from anywhere. Not for everyone, but one of the best decisions I made this year. Have you ever tried something like this? If you work independently and want to know more about how it works, feel free to reach out. Always happy to talk about it.

The €4,706 year-in-numbers card is such a fun way to tell this story. Pet sitting as the hack that funds a year across Brazil, Japan and beyond is the kind of trade-off more freelancers should hear about.
