One of the many things I learned while working as an SEO content writer is the importance of keywords.
Keywords are a fundamental part of SEO. They're the words and phrases people type into search engines when they're looking for information. And because people don't always type complete, grammatically correct sentences into Google, some keywords can look… well, a little strange.
For example, I once wrote a blog for a real estate client where one of the important keywords was something along the lines of “infrastructure homes in Mumbai.”
Anyone looking at that phrase would probably wonder: How on earth am I supposed to put that into a sentence without making it sound ridiculous?
That's where a writer's editing skills come in.
SEO writing isn't just about stringing keywords together. In fact, one of the most important lessons I learned is this:
You don't frame a sentence around the keyword. You frame the keyword within the sentence.
So instead of forcing “infrastructure homes in Mumbai” into a sentence, I wrote:
“There is an undeniable connection between infrastructure and homes in Mumbai.”
The keyword is still there. Google can find it. But more importantly, a human can read it without wondering what the hell they're looking at.
And that's the balance good SEO writing needs to strike: writing for search engines without forgetting that there's a person on the other side of the screen!
