Coinbase’s new campaign draws from a familiar gaming concept: NPCs.
Non-player characters, rendered in a lo-fi, 80s-style game world, are used to frame something larger: autonomy within digital and financial systems.
The mechanics are made simple:
recognition → disruption → agency
You first align with the system.
Then you see it.
Then comes the possibility of stepping outside it.
Developed with
@isleofany and directed by Oscar Hudson, the film avoids over-explaining, relying instead on a cultural shorthand.
What's interesting is that this isn’t pure animation. The NPC world is constructed using real people, choreographed movement, and tightly controlled environments to simulate that “programmed” quality.
