You might already be a Forward Deployed Engineer — you just don’t call yourself one.
These days, one engineering term is showing up everywhere: Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE).
And the conversation often sounds like this:
“Being just a developer is no longer enough.”
“If you want to stay valuable, become a Forward Deployed Engineer.”
There is some truth in that.
But there’s another side of the story.
A Forward Deployed Engineer is not simply someone who writes code.
They work close to the customer, understand the actual business problem, translate messy requirements into technical solutions, integrate systems, deploy them into the real environment, and keep improving them based on what happens in production.
Now think about a good freelancer, technical consultant, agency developer, or technical founder.
They meet the client.
They discover the problem.
They recommend the solution.
They design the architecture.
They build it.
They integrate third-party systems.
They deploy it.
And when something breaks in production, they’re often the person who has to fix it.
Sound familiar?
Many developers may already be practicing parts of Forward Deployed Engineering without having the title.
But this doesn’t mean there’s nothing new to learn.
The next level requires becoming stronger at things like:
→ Business problem discovery → System architecture → Enterprise integrations → AI and automation → Security and permissions → Production deployment → Observability and reliability → Communicating technical trade-offs to non-technical people
That’s the part I find interesting about the rise of FDEs.
The future may not belong only to developers who can write the best code.
It may belong to engineers who can walk into a real business problem, understand it deeply, and take responsibility from problem → solution → production outcome.
Maybe Forward Deployed Engineering isn’t an entirely new way of working.
Maybe the industry has finally given a name to the way some of the best client-facing engineers have been working for years.
Are you learning to become an FDE or were you already doing the job without the title?
