Artichokes are a sneaky hard subject to paint. Every leaf overlaps another one.
So I don’t start with leaves. I start with the spiral.
My pencil sketch is just the rhythm of the leaves curling around the center. Once that rhythm feels right, the details almost place themselves. Then comes a light wash for form, then slow layers of green and violet, letting each one dry so the edges stay sharp.
The same lesson carries straight into packaging work. When a brand needs ingredient art, the first question isn’t color or style. It’s structure: what shape makes this ingredient instantly readable on a shelf?
Get that right and the rest is polish.
What ingredient would be the hardest to illustrate for your brand?
