A raw 3D render can be mathematically correct, but emotionally flat.
Post-production is where an asset stops looking like CGI and starts looking like high-end commercial photography.
Here are 4 grading habits I use in DaVinci Resolve to elevate final renders:
• Render 32-bit EXR: Protect highlight data and shadows for maximum dynamic range in color grading.
• Leverage cryptomattes: Isolate labels, glass, and metals to adjust contrast without re-rendering the scene.
• Add optical imperfections: Introduce micro-grain and subtle lens diffusion to kill that artificial "digital sharpness."
• Calibrate color contrast: Separate subject tones from the background using targeted curves rather than global saturation.
The 3D engine creates the geometry and light; post-production sets the mood. Do you finish your product visuals directly in the render engine, or pass them through dedicated grading software? 👇
