KŌSA is a concept website for a contemporary artist residency in Tokyo, a city where art, culture and creativity converge in unexpected ways.

Inspired by that spirit of discovery, we designed an immersive web experience that unfolds gradually, inviting visitors to uncover something new with every scroll. Through thoughtful layering, movement, and rhythm, the site feels less like browsing a traditional website and more like stepping into a contemporary art publication.

Guided by three core design principles: layering, movement, and rhythm, we used Squarespace's new Finish Layer tools to bring the experience to life almost entirely with native platform functionality.

How we incorporated Finish Layer:

Layers & Block Transforms We used Layers and Block Transforms throughout the experience to create depth, visual hierarchy, and an editorial sense of composition. These tools were especially impactful in the hero, where overlapping imagery immediately establishes KŌSA's expressive visual language, and in the footer, where layered elements create a memorable ending to the journey.

Block Animations We combined Looping Animations, Hover Effects, and Block Animations (On Appear, On Scroll Appear, and On Scroll Passes) to create a cinematic sense of movement throughout the site. From the animated images and video in the homepage second section to the subtle reveals and interactions in the testimonial section, motion helps guide visitors through the narrative while reinforcing the feeling of discovery.

Stacks Stacks allowed us to build flexible, consistent layouts while maintaining rhythm and alignment across the experience. They were especially valuable in the KŌSA Experience sections, making it easy to create a modular card system.

Device-Specific Editing Device-Specific Editing gave us the flexibility to thoughtfully tailor the experience. Being able to selectively hide, reposition, and refine blocks ensured that the immersive desktop experience translated seamlessly to mobile without compromising the visual narrative or usability.
