From "chaotic Gen Z anthem" to finished video: my actual AI songwriting process
My daughter loves Stranger Things. So back in April, I decided to write her a song about it — but I wanted it to actually sound like something she'd play, not like a mom trying to be cool.
Here's what that process really looked like:
I started with ChatGPT, just talking through the idea: "I want to write a song for my daughter loving Stranger Things, but using Gen Z slang." The first draft it gave me back was fine, but not it. So I kept pushing:
Told it to make the tone more chaotic and Gen Z
Asked for more focus on Will Byers' character development, plus Max
Still wasn't quite right — so I had it add inside jokes specific to my daughters, since they're huge fans
Four rounds in, I finally had lyrics that actually sounded like us, not like generic AI output.
From there, I took those lyrics into Suno and picked my own genre direction — something modern, closer to what my oldest daughter actually listens to, since I wanted the sound to match her taste even if the song itself was for my youngest.
The song sat finished since spring. Life happened. It wasn't until last week that I finally sat down, built a video around it, and posted it to YouTube.
My oldest was pretty unfazed (she's a tough audience). My youngest — the actual Stranger Things fan — loved it.
The real lesson: the AI didn't write "my song." It gave me four rough drafts I kept redirecting until it sounded like something only I could've made for my kid. That back-and-forth is the craft.
