Summary
Design Process
My design process is broken down into four phases. The timeline of each phase will be project dependent.
Conceptualization: The first step in designing your app is to conceptualize the idea and turn it into a viable product. This involves brainstorming, researching the target audience (User stories & Personas), and creating a detailed plan for the app's functionality and features (Flow Maps).
Wireframing and prototyping: Once we have a clear idea of what problems the app solves, the next step is to create a wireframe and prototype. This involves mapping out the app's user interface and designing the different screens and functionalities. A wireframe is a basic sketch of the app's layout and functionality, while a prototype is a more detailed representation of the app's look and feel.
Visual design: After the wireframe and prototype have been approved, the next step is to design the app's visual elements, such as the logo, color scheme, and typography if these branding elements have not already been created. This involves creating a style guide that will be used throughout the app.
Prepare for handoff: Once the visual design is complete and approved I will assist in handing off the design to development teams as needed. I recommend getting development teams involved in the early stages of complex app creation to ensure there are no problem areas for development.
What's included
User Personas & Stories
You will receive at least three user personas for your product as well as user stories. This phase involves diving deeper into the "why" a user may use this product. During the research process User personas that include user stories will be created.
Flow Map
After discussing the needs of the application, I will create a flow map. Creating a flow map of the entire product before wire-framing is essential to understand all of the features that will need to be designed. This also allows stakeholders to understand how the product will flow and allows for more ideation before getting into the wireframe phase.
Wireframes (Ux Design)
Low to Mid fidelity wireframes will be created for each screen outlined in the flow map. Functionality is imperative to a successful product design. These wireframes can be prototyped in some cases if necessary.
App Style Guide (Ui Kit / Design System)
This deliverable will be assessed based on client needs. If a brand is established already then I will use the elements of the brand to help inform the visual design of the product. If app branding is required then I am more than happy to assist in the creation! A Ui kit or Design System can be used in the future in order to quickly scale a product or app as your design team or application features grow. (Please note: A Ui Kit/Style Guide is usually minimal compared to a fully built-out Design System. The needs of your product at its current stage will help me asses which may be best.)
Visual Design Mockups (Ui Design)
After the wireframes and style guide are approved by stakeholders, we get to get into the visual design (one of my favorite parts). You will receive pixel-perfect Ui designs for each screen laid out in the flow map/wireframe.
Clickable Prototype
Once the app features have been designed, I prototype them in order to test the flow of the app or feature. Prototypes are also a great way to present to stakeholders and investors. I may also meet with development teams during this stage to discuss functionality, troubleshoot any potential issues and help them to understand their future workload/tasks. Prototypes can also be used in early user tests.
