About this service

Summary

Piecing together a story is complicated and overwhelming. There's a lot of different parts to consider and it's hard to hold them all in your head at the same time. That's where a developmental edit comes in - to give you analysis and feedback on how your story is currently perceived (and what might improve it).
These improvements largely depend on the genre or style that you are trying to write in. The more information you give me on what you are trying to accomplish, the better I can help you get there. While I'm most familiar with the fantasy genre (and will probably be the most help there), I also frequently read romance and YA lit.
Regardless of what you are trying to accomplish, I don't want you to worry about insensitivity or an editor high-jacking your story. I'm not here to tell you what's wrong or what you NEED to change about your story. Mostly, I'm going to do my best to give you feedback that reflects how your story comes across to a reader and advice on how stories in your genre typically structure themselves (but ultimately what you change is up to you).
If you're still unsure about developmental edits, please feel free to contact me. Assuming I have the spare time, I'd be happy to provide you with a sample based off the first chapter (depending on size) of your manuscript.

FAQs

  • How much does a developmental edit cost?

$0.015 per word. For projects under 10,000 words, a flat fee of $150 will be requested instead.

    Yes, of course!

What's included

  • In-Manuscript Comments

During the initial read, I'll leave comments within your manuscript highlighting my initial reactions/perceptions from a reader stand-point. These aren't meant to be too analytical or conclusive, but to give you a better idea of how a reader might engage with your text.

  • Developmental Report

The developmental report will break down your story into detailed sections, noting its strengths and weaknesses. This report is divided into specific sections intended to help you better understand how your story is working as whole: Characters, Setting, Plot, Conflict, Prose, Overall, and Additional Considerations.
