About this service

Summary

I will assess your website, app or user-facing process (e.g. onboarding, checkout, etc.) against the best UX practices and give you recommendations how to improve it.
Why Care?
The experience of your users translates directly into whether they use your product and where they spend their time and money.
Heuristic evaluations are the first step to understanding and improving your product's performance.
It's a cheaper way, when compared to user testing, to make easy fixes with big upsides. Put simply: more bang for the buck.
What Is a Heuristic Evaluation?
Just like any profession, UX design has its own best practices for building usable products. We call them usability heuristics. They are tried and true rules-of-thumb industry pros follow when building user interfaces. Why? They are simply proven to deliver great user experiences no matter the product or service.
Usability heuristics are organized in frameworks, or collections, that allow us to systematically and thoroughly assess a product from many different facets. One of the most popular frameworks is the Nielsen-Norman's 10 Usability Heuristics.
A side note: The Nielsen-Norman Group (NNG) are kind of a big deal in the UX industry. They publish tons of research and training for UX design, and are recognized as leading experts in the field.
I use the Nielsen-Norman's framework to assess your website or app because it especially developed to test user interfaces.
What Are Some Usability Heuristics?
Some usability heuristics include:
Visibility of system status: does the system (your website or app) effectively tell the user what is going on at any given moment?
Match between system and the real world: your users have their own mental models of how the world works. Your website or app should use your users' words, phrases, and concepts, so it avoids confusion and errors.
Consistency and standards: users should never wonder whether different words, actions, or situation mean the same thing. We need to use consistent design and styling across elements and situations. It's common sense, but it's commonly gotten wrong.

FAQs

  • What's a heuristic evaluation?

It's an assessment of your website's or app's user interface against the best industry practices.

  • Why not just do user testing?

You can and you should. Usability testing and heuristic evaluation are complimentary. They give you insights about your product from different angles. Two extra benefits: heuristic evaluations are cheaper and faster.

  • How long does it take?

Usually 5 business days. The time it takes will vary depending on the scope of what we are assessing. A check-out flow will take less time than a full e-commerce site.

  • What do I do with the heuristic evaluation?

Each evaluation comes with a list of actionable recommendations ranked in order of importance. You can review them with your team and discuss which ones you want to implement and in what order.

What's included

  • A Heuristic Evaluation Report

    - A detailed report assessing how your website or app stacks up against the best UX design practices. - Actionable recommendations for improvement, so you never wonder what to do next. - An assessment score that gives you nuance of how well your site or app are doing. I use the Nielsen-Norman framework of 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design.

  • A Video Walk-Through

    - A video walk-thru explaining the findings and recommendations in the report.

  • A 30-Minute Video Call

    - A 30-minute video call where you can ask me anything related to your heuristic evaluation report.
