To be honest, I like to work as the client needs, but generally speaking a good process is one that takes time to work out the goals for the website. From there, you can assess whatever other data you can find such as audience. You need to use your brand to help create something truly unique that will set you apart from your competition. Your audience needs to know who you are. During the wire framing process it's also good to include the dev team to ensure the intron for the design is not out of scope. It's then the design that helps you better connect and STAY connected. This is about creating a relationship and value. This is where the design comes in. It needs to ensure best practices of course, and work on multiple devices and engage well with your audience. I can work with you to help figure out answers to those questions. The design phase of the process will typically go through an iteration process (much like wireframes). From there, once approved, I like to continue working with the team to ensure dev is able to implement the designs well and answer any potential questions regarding functionality. Ultimately, I like to have a very open line of communication to ensure everyone involved is kept in the loop.
