The first I need is a script, and idea and a direction. That would be provided by you. I either receive footage that been shot by a film crew, or i will do a footage search if the project requirement is to be made with stock footage (This however makes the process longer as the most time consuming part is finding the right footage for the specific project). I will then, either working by myself, or working alongside a team lead, be it a director, or creative, I make selects, finding the best footage to get a first edit. This edit will be trying to find the best way to tell the story, or message. You don't necessarily reach it on the first edit. Numerous rounds of feedback maybe required before we get to that best version. Once the story/sessage is in place we can then inject style and tone to make it sing. This too can require a few rounds of feedback as the style and tone may not be quite right on first attempts, or the style and tone of the video then gets in the way of the story/message, so we may then have to dial it back or take another approach so that the style and tone marry with the story/message. Video editing is a very organic process, but with my years of experience and understanding clients needs I confident I can get the desired outcome as quickly as possible.
