About this service

Summary

A light copy edit is almost solely mechanical. In addition to various small cleanup tasks (such as removing extra spaces) I check for typos, punctuation, missing/repeated words, and grammatical errors; consistency in hyphenation, capitalization, and spelling; and the correct formatting for any citations. I also flag up any issues of clarity at the sentence level where the writer's meaning has not come across.

FAQs

  • How long will this take?

A light copy edit is the fastest to do, but timing really depends on the length of the document. From sample to completion, a 100,000 word document should take about a month. A concrete timeline for your project will be agreed upon before starting.

What's included

  • Redlined Manuscript

An edited manuscript/document with all the changes visible and tracked via Word's tracked changes tool. There will also be comments explaining edits or asking for clarification.

  • Style Sheet

A document containing information for the style guides and dictionaries used; rules implemented or deviated from; decisions regarding capitalization, spelling, and hyphenation; and (for fiction) lists of characters and settings with brief descriptions.

  • Clean Manuscript

If a cleanup pass is part of the agreed project, a clean manuscript with all discussed and review changes accepted and comments cleared. This document should be ready for typesetting/formatting.
