OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is devising a key that uses a pseudo-random sequence to vary the probability of the next word that will be used by the AI software. Other AI developers are likely to create their own keys. When these keys are supplied to search engines, search engines will be able to match the watermark of each AI tool using its probability variance.
Light editing isn't likely to remove the watermark. Successfully removing it requires not only removing the right words but also removing enough of them that a match isn't made. It's possible, but statistically, it's highly improbable.
The only sure way to avoid ever being penalized for using AI content is not to use it. However, Google states that its goal is to promote sites with information that offers value to readers. So, if the fees for human-written content aren't affordable for you, but you want higher-quality content than AI provides on its own, human-hybrid AI content offers a lower-cost option.
