If the client already has a logo, the designer should find out why they want to change it. What is the client company’s personality? Do they have a tagline which needs to be incorporated into the logo? How much of a break from their current identity are they willing to explore? Are there any elements which are mandatory? The designer should establish the scope of the project before starting any design work. How many concepts will be presented? How many rounds of changes will the client get? What are the deliverables? What is the budget? What is the schedule? Will the client need any printed materials (e.g., business cards) or just a logo for online use? The designer should clarify the points of contact within the client’s company. Who has the authority to approve the design? Who will receive the deliverables?Who handles the billing? The designer should research the industry in which the client works. The designer should ask the client about their competitors and look at their graphic identities. How well known is the client in their industry? Who is the client’s target audience? If possible, the designer should talk to some of the client’s customers. This way the designer can find out what the client and their business means to them, and perhaps why the customer chose to work with the client.
