About this service

Summary

Editing or proofreading of texts used for academic purposes. This could be a personal statement, curriculum vitae, dissertation, journal article, grant application, et cetera. Different levels of editing/proofreading are available, to accommodate different needs.
Rate and timeline are affected by length of project, and potentially the type of editorial work needed.
Due to the sensitive nature of academic texts, I do not post examples of this work publicly.
Proofreading
Entails checking the text for typos. Proofreading is suitable for texts that are considered to be essentially final.
Copyediting
Broad in scope. Spelling, grammar, word usage, and punctuation are all checked. Additionally, a uniform style is established across the text; alternate wording or other changes may be suggested in cases where the text is repetitive; and inconsistent or inaccurate portions of text will be brought to the author’s attention. Copyediting is suitable for texts that constitute a complete unit—a full manuscript, chapter, section, article, story, blog post—that may be in various draft phases. It is not generally suitable for partial texts.
Language editing
A more detailed look at language usage, resulting in a text that reads naturally to native English speakers. It is available to anyone; however, this type of editing is generally performed for non-native English speakers. Language editing is suitable for texts in various draft stages and is often combined with copyediting.
All of my editing includes the potential for discussion of suggestions once I have gone through the document. Wherever I am unclear on something in the text, I will leave a comment explaining the ambiguity, and do my best to outline alternative suggestions for each possibility. This will often pre-empt the need for discussion, but the option remains there.
