What is the Hero's Journey?
What do Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Star Wars, The Matrix, Spider-Man, The Lion King, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Serpico, and Michael Clayton all have in common? Despite coming from different genres, all these movies and books follow the general pattern of the Hero's Journey. Perhaps one of the most powerful mythological architectures of all time, the Hero's Journey is a framework at the center of some of the greatest stories ever told.
From my work as a journalist of 15 years, novel writing, scriptwriting, and story consulting, I have learned all the ins and outs of this marvelous tool. With the right set of characters, the Hero's Journey can turn a mediocre plot into a powerful, life-changing story that resonates with your audience. I have used its principles in many of my book and TV script projects.
While it doesn't magically apply to every story ever written, the Monomyth, first developed by Joseph Campbell, can greatly boost the storytelling power of science fiction, fantasy, and stories about protagonists who face life-or-death struggles.
